Red Threads

“An invisible red thread connects those destined to meet regardless of time, place or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle but never break.” -Ancient Chinese Belief

While waiting I’ve had many red thread experiences which validates my belief that we all really are connected to each other in so many different ways. I can’t even begin to start recounting them here…! I have taken some of my experiences throughout this journey and tried to put them into words for you …some unforgettable moments that have touched my heart …well…you’ll see…! Not all are red threads but fun memories of this journey.

Most Magical Moment: Seeing a butterfly appearing wherever I am…at the beach, on the school playground or in my backyard…there is always one around! The most magical one was the bright, yellow one that fluttered with me after I mailed my application.

Most Inspirational Moment: Being in a prayer group with so many women connected to adoptions.

Best Red Thread Moment: Being accepted by “Cradle of Hope” after sitting at the table of “Angels of Hope”!

Most Embarrassing Moment: Standing on the corner near the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. (while waiting for my documents to be legalized by the Chinese Embassy) with a stuffed panda in my arms explaining to a police officer that my car was stolen…only to realize that I had parked on the next block over!

Most Frustrating Moment: Listening to “How to Learn Chinese” CD’s for 14 hours on a car ride to Florida! Needless to say I’m still learning!!

Most Exciting Moment So Far: Receiving the infamous brown envelope from China…visa information!

Most Heartfelt Moment: While taking an Emergent Reading class in the summer, a student in the class was sharing her projects. One of them was on the book, I Love You Like Crazy Cakes, which is about an adoption from China. Afterwards she gave me her book! I was next to present and instead the class asked to hear “my adoption story” instead of my projects!!

Most Endearing Moment: When anyone uses the term “Red Thread” in their conversation!

Biggest Reality Check: Shopping for cribs!

and certain of what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1

100 Wishes Quilt

If you would like to be a part of a special creative endeavor for this sweet little baby, I have a little project for you to help out with. I know I’m a typical teacher…. continuously giving out projects!

A tradition in Northern China, the 100 Good Wishes quilt is called a Bai Jia Bei and it is a custom to invite friends and family to contribute a patch of cloth with a wish for your child.
Part of the patch of cloth goes into the quilt for the child and the other part goes into her memory book. The quilt contains the luck, energy and good wishes from all the family and friends who contribute. The quilt is then passed down from generation to generation. I would love for you to contribute a 9”x 9” cotton square of fabric and a good wish for my soon to be daughter, whose name is undecided at this time. (Julie or Julia) Just pick out any cotton fabric and cut two pieces….one should be a 9”x 9” piece which will be sewn into the quilt and the other piece should be a 2”x 2”square of the same fabric. This smaller piece is glued onto a 4”x 6” index card and your name and wish is written on it to save in a memory book. That way we can match your wish to the fabric on the quilt as she grows up and looks back at all of the good wishes. Including a picture of you with the index card is a great idea too!!! Butterflies, pandas, and just about anything pink or purple would work if you’re wondering what kind of fabric to choose!!! When you’re done, just stick both in an envelope and mail back to me.

Thanks!!! I know this will be such a special quilt when it is finished!

Many, many thanks to everyone for sending all of the heartfelt wishes and adorable fabric squares for the 100 wishes quilt. It looks like this amazing project is finally coming into the home stretch! I can't even begin to tell you all how much these little envelopes filled with fabric and well wishes have helped sustain me throughout this journey. I get teary eyed thinking about how one simple little square of fabric can bring so much hope and when all are joined together to create a blanket of warmth and love. I'm so appreciative and know this will be a very special keepsake. When they are all connected it will be such a gift of love for my sweet little child. Can you guess what color thread will be used?

Here's Zorro showing off his quilt square. Of course he had to choose a fabric with fluffy puppies on it! The fabrics are just beautiful and will be so vibrant when completed.

The fabric I chose to cover the 100 wishes album is cream colored with Asian children dancing and playing. It is 6"x 6" in size and filled with lovely wishes, prayers and sweet notes.
