May 2008

Mother’s Day was so special. My heart is so full with love for my precious girls’….I cannot even begin to share how emotional I was feeling the entire day. Most days it just feels completely natural, having two daughters, and just going about my business as usual. But, sometimes, it seems unreal, that we have gone to China and come back, and that we actually have two beautiful girls…..how did that happen? And, why did it take so long?? I have never been so happy….

“For finding your mother,
There’s one certain test.
You must look for the creature,
Who loves you the best.”
~David Kirk (Little Miss Spider)

Courtney and I have been involved with Girl Scouts since she was in Kindergarten. This year, the troop entered Juniors. In May, we had the Feral Cats of Cheshire send a representative to talk about their organization, and how our Troop could help with fundraising. It was a very informative meeting. The girls’ loved hearing about the kittens, and they were very interested in how the women started finding the cats, spaying/neutering them, tagging them, finding homes. By the end of the meeting, I was ready to sign up!! We registered our family to be a ‘foster’ family for kittens, and received a call just about one week later…and, that is how we came to have ‘Riley’…..when he arrived, he was approx. 7 weeks old, and we had been told he was a female kitten, they had named ‘Georgia’….’she’ was found in a parking lot in New Haven on George Street….and, she was ADORABLE!!!! A black kitten with white markings and incredibly long whiskers! So cute, and so fuzzy, and so cuddly…..We found out about a week later that ‘she’ was a ‘he’, and ‘Riley’ came to be! One of our friends thought we should name him ‘Foster’ since that was what we were SUPPOSED to be doing…..lol….I think that lasted about an hour or so?! He is a hellion, but, also very sweet, and very tolerant of being held in awkward positions by Miss Claire, who loves, loves, loves having a kitten! Courtney is also thrilled with our new addition, and we know Daddy will come around soon….. He is already absently petting Riley when he doesn’t realize he is on his lap…it is just a matter of time!

Courtney had her last United Girls Choir concert at the end of May. It has been an amazing year for her in the all girls choir, based out of New Haven, Connecticut. It is a wonderful organization; very efficiently run, and the girls’ come together and sing songs that are inspiring, and truly beautiful. I am so glad we found this group, and know Courtney will continue to enjoy it for many years.

During the summer, we are lucky enough to live with my Mom at the beach in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Since we are on/in the water every day, we felt it was very important to have Claire take swimming lessons as soon as possible. So, I signed her up for her first Swim class! I decided a private class would be more appropriate, since our little one is very chatty, and tends to lose her concentration if she is distracted…..Watching Claire during her first class was hysterical because she spent most of her time chatting with ‘Katie’, her new instructor. I had to tell Katie to simply tell Claire to ‘listen’, which is what they do in school when she loses focus, and it worked! She came out of the class with the ability to swim about 5 yards before she starts to sink……and, able to do a ‘torpedo’ off the side, which would be a sitting dive.

Steve’s Mum and Sister arrived from England to meet their new granddaughter and niece on May 23rd! We were so excited to see them! Although the girls’ were in school, we managed to do some siteseeing, and have lots of fun…..highlighted by a trip up to Deerfield, Massachusetts to The Yankee Candle Company, and Magic Wings butterfly sanctuary.

We celebrated Claire’s Baptism on May 31st. It was a very emotional day, and we were so happy to share it with our closest friends, and family. As promised, my Sister, Karen arrived with Sam, Nathaniel and Emma. Our Pastor, John Marschhausen, is a wonderful inspiration to us, so warm, and welcoming to everyone. He was touched by the love he felt between all of us, and how close we are to our friends who were able to join us to celebrate Claire’s special union with God.

Courtney and Claire are loving having their Granny and Auntie Susan here. Sue is a teacher at home, and it has been so much fun watching her interact with the girls’….she gets right in there to play with them, and they LOVE it! Steve and I are enjoying our time with her and Mum so much, and we are thrilled they were able to come over to visit!

Riley Arrives!! Our 'foster' kitty was permanent within an hour of arriving at our home....who could resist such a cute little face?!

It's going to take a few lessons for you to learn how to hold Riley correctly. We are lucky he is very tolerant of being folded in half, and held around the neck!

Courtney's friend, Katerina was the first to meet our newest addition!

During the first lesson, you were holding on to 'Miss Katie' for dear life!

You loved going to the swim class every day...you didn't like that you couldn't go on the weekends!

Yahoo!!!! You are swimming.....a short distance, but, you are doing it all on your own!!!

Our trip to Yankee Candle was a lot of fun!

Daddy helped you dipping candles,
because the wax was very hot

Courtney was so excited when a butterfly landed on her hand while we were walking around Magic Wings.

You loved being with your Auntie Susan....
she is a lot of fun!
