While We Wait

Friday, October 17, 2008

There have been so many things that we have done While We Wait over the past 2 years. We joined and became active in our local Families with Children from China group, we attended many seminars and classes about adoption and children. We’ve made a lot of new friends, we’ve read books and articles, watched TV programs about China and really just opened our hearts and minds to a lot of things.

Here are some of the most recent events that I wanted to share and record on this site.

September 6 – We had another yard sale to help raise funds for the adoption. Thanks to everyone that donated items, helped with set up, daily activities and clean up. We really couldn’t have done it without everyone’s help. This was the 3rd yard sale we have had with all the items that were donated to us. I want to thank every one of the over 30 families that donated items to us to help us raise funds. It was a great help.

September 14 – Ladybug Shower from Nana and Guma. Despite Hurricane Ike blowing all the way up through Kentucky everyone had a wonderful time. Thanks for making it such a wonderful shower. Thanks to Terri for making the homemade ladybug cookies. YUM! We got some great gifts, lots of beautiful clothes, a stroller and a Dora Tricycle too. Thanks to everyone for coming and braving the storm.

September 20 – Chinese Stork Shower from Mamma and Aunt Joyce. I wanted the Chinese Stork theme since I saw the pattern in December 2006. Thanks for working so hard to make it a beautiful shower. Once again, great gifts, lots of clothes, and a Barbie Bicycle too. This girl is racking up some great wheels. I think she will need her own parking space in the garage. Thanks to everyone for coming.

September 28 – Butterfly Shower from my friends Lala , Amy Lou and Gen. What can I say, they out-did themselves. Amy was trying to keep up with my standard of throwing a theme party, let me tell you, they did a great job. All the way to the butterfly shaped appetizers, crackers and chocolates. Amazing. It was great to see old and new friends there. We got such an assortment of gifts, from the basic cups and bowls to the start of her college fund. Thanks to everyone for coming.

August and September – My mom and I tackled the One Hundred Good Wishes Quilt. I had always wanted to do this for Caitlyn ever since I heard of the tradition. But knowing that I can’t even sew a button (still send everything to mom) and mom can basically do a hem and take in a seam, this would be a big project for us. But thanks to some tips from friends, some good quilt books and a lot of luck, I think we have done a pretty good job. Caitlyn’s OHGWQ has 69 pieces of fabric from 63 different family and friends. There will also be a coordinating scrapbook with swatches of the fabric, pictures and wishes to her from all the family and friends. Thank you to all who put the time and thought in to making this a precious gift for our daughter. This is a life long gift to her.

Ducks It Is – Since Caitlyn has such a beautiful bedroom, a plain white bathroom just won’t do. Nick and I decided to decorate the hall bathroom as well. We had a hard time deciding between frogs and ducks. Both are just too cute for a child’s bathroom. Then one day Nick said “She decided ducks.” Huh? He said “look at Caitlyn’s outfit in her referral picture. There is a duck on her jacket.” And so, Ducks It Is. We decided on a great ocean turquoise color called Mermaid Treasure. When he first put it on the walls, Nick wasn’t so sure. But I insisted. Then once the bathroom was tidy and all was decked in white and yellow, it really came together. We are both very pleased and we hope Caitlyn will like her Ducky bathroom.
