Paperchase

 

The adoption paperchase is not easy! We have spent about 6 months getting all of the required paperwork together for an international adoption. Although we started out deciding to adopt from China in September 2007, we chose to switch to a small program with Japan in January 2008. Here is the list of our paperwork accomplishments!

• September 28, 2007 – Decided to adopt

• September 30, 2007 – Sent application to China adoption agency and received acceptance

• September 30, 2007 – Sent Rain’s passport in for expedited update

• October 2, 2007 – Ordered certified copies of birth certificates and our marriage license from VitalCheck.com

• October 5, 2007 – Received Rain’s updated passport back

• October 12, 2007 – Picked up birth certificates and marriage license from UPS

• October 12, 2007 – Sent application in to local adoption services agency for a home study

• October 17, 2007 – Physicals for both Rain and Steve as well as local county police checks

• October 26, 2007 – First interview with social worker for home study

• November 5, 2007 – Individual interviews with social worker for home study

• November 14, 2007 – Final interview at our house with social worker for home study

• December 18, 2007 – Home study completed

• December 19, 2007 – Mailed in Form I-600A, Application for Advance Processing of Orphan Petition, to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)

• January 17, 2008 – Decided to switch to new Japan adoption program with Across the World Adoptions (ATWA) outside of San Francisco, CA

• January 18, 2008 – Fingerprinted for USCIS and faxed in application to ATWA

• February 1, 2008 – Sent USCIS a country change request letter along with an updated home study reflecting the change to Japan

• February 26, 2008 – Received Form I-171H, Notice of Favorable Determination Concerning Application for Advance Processing of Orphan Petition, from USCIS

• February 29, 2008 – Met our wonderful new agency director and Japanese adoption facilitator in San Francisco, CA

• March 4, 2008 – Completed and mailed our photo album that the birth mothers will use to select the adoptive parents for their child to ATWA

• March 25, 2008 – ATWA took our paperwork and photo album to Tokyo, Japan for the birth mothers to see!!!!
