Adopting Julia

We began the home study and dossier preparation process prior to receiving a referral. We met with our social worker from Jewish Family Services three times during the home study that began on March 3, 2009. We focused on our dossier primarily after the home study was completed in May. At the very same time we were ready to submit our dossier, we received, on a fateful Sunday, August 23rd, a referral of a 3 year old little girl – our Julia! Talk about more than perfect timing! We quietly walked into our office with Emma staying the living room and read through her information – like we said, we could not believe the personality is quite similar to Emma! And Emma is one smart, sassy, loving little girl with a big heart who loves to be with us. We immediately contacted several doctors and all said she appears healthy and small, but healthy. With nutrition, she will catch up.

OUR TIMELINE

2009

March 3rd – Home study process with Jewish Family Services (JFS) (Rochester, NY) started! Our appointment with our home study social worker took place three years later almost to the day when we received Emma’s referral (3/8/06).

June 10th – Home study completed.

July 3rd – August 20th – Dossier preparation and paper-chasing which includes application letter to the Chinese Centre for Adoption Affairs (CCAA); original birth certificates; original marriage certificates; police background clearances; employment verifications, medical appointments, and financial statements – all of those documents were certified at the county, state and national levels.

July 13th – Emma’s United States passport issued! This allows her to come with us for the adoption trip with Julia!

July 27th – United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) fingerprinting appointment in Buffalo, NY.

August 8th – USCIS approval retrieved.

August 23rd – Referral of Qi Fu Zi by Children’s Home Society and Family Services (CHSFS) (St. Paul, Minnesota). We fell in love with Qi Fu Zi when we saw her pictures for the first time!

August 24th – Qi Fu Zi’s third birthday!

August 25th – “Green lights” received from three local physicians who reviewed the medical / developmental / growth report files involving Qi Fu Zi.

August 25th – Letter of Intent (LOI) was prepared by CHSFS in order for us to formally make the request to CCAA to adopt Qi Fu Zi.

September 16th – our DTC (Dossier to China) when CHSFS sent our dossier to China!

September 28th – Our LID (Log In Date); the CCAA formally entered our dossier into their database to begin its review of our dossier!

November 25th – Our LOA (Letter of Acceptance) from the CCAA arrived! Our dossier was approved by the CCAA! This represents the second last step of our adoption journey to Julia. This document arrived to us one full month earlier than anticipated! Imagine the shock we received!

December 16th – Our I-800 Form (Petition to Classify Convention Adoptee as an Immediate Relative) was provisionally approved by the USCIS.

December 22nd – Vaccination shots  for the entire Kane Family at the local Passport Health Center. We also received H1N1 vaccine shots on December 18th.

2010

January 4th week – Visa applications being processed via in-person appointment at the Chinese Consulate in New York City.

January 25th – Approximate date of our TA (travel approval) - about two to two-and-a-half months from receipt of LOA on 11/25/09. Once the TA is received, this means travel can take place approximately two weeks later. An appointment with the U.S. Consulate (located in Guangzhou, China) has already been arranged by CHSFS due to approved I-800 paperwork.
