Trip to China
All Days  |  Previous Day  |  Next Day

Monday, May 12, 2008

We decided to skip today’s tour of the Buddhist Temple and Natural History Museum . . . Mary Grace woke us up at 5:00am this morning and when she went down for a nap a couple hours later, we all did the same.

The great news is the antibiotics are kicking in and we are all on the mend. We’re especially grateful that Mark is finally feeling better. He even felt good enough last night to have dinner at Lucy’s with Delilah, Mary Grace and some of the other families in our group. Poor guy . . . he was hit the hardest with this bug, but never complained at all.

It was a day of shopping for all of us. When we were still at home, Brad promised Mark he’d take him to the electronics market here in Guangzhou. Brad’s visited this area of the city during his UPS trips to Guangzhou.

While they were at the electronics market, Delilah was doing last minute shopping here on the island for souvenirs and gifts. The stores are nothing like stores in the States; they’re all very small. The prices are low to begin with and even so, most of the shop owners are willing to negotiate prices. It’s amazing how they can support themselves and their family members. Delilah’s been doing a lot of shopping with Dawn since we arrived here in Guangzhou. Admittedly, we both started out pretty bad at the whole bargaining thing . . . so afraid to offend anyone with too low an offer. But after just a couple of days here, we’ve figured it out! We’ve found that the shop owners and their employees, especially those at our favorite stores, have been nothing but courteous, friendly and honest.

With everyone feeling better, we were finally able to go out for dinner as a family of four here in Guangzhou. With the guys feeling so bad, it’s mostly been Delilah and Mary Grace dining with friends at Lucy’s, which is just down the street from the White Swan. Many of the adoptive families staying at the White Swan dine at Lucy’s because they serve western-style foods, which we all miss so much at this point in our journeys. A grilled cheese sandwich has never tasted so good! But instead of Lucy’s, tonight we went to a Thai restaurant called the Cow and Bridge. We’re not too familiar with Thai food, but it came highly recommended and we all ended up very satisfied with our dinner choices.

Sorry we haven’t had the greatest pictures to share these past few days.
