We had to wake up early to have Grace’s medical exam. I think
she was a real trooper with the late night before and the early
morning. Our appointment was for 7:45 AM, so we had to get up
and have breakfast. Adoptive families are EVERYWHERE! Grace’s
eyes kept watching all the white parents with their sweet little
children. Grace has begun to call me Mama and when I ask her
“where is Baba” she looks at David. She only smiles when I ask
her to call Baba. Our appointment only lasted a few minutes and
Grace passed with flying colors. She is well enough to travel!
After that we went shopping! All the shops cater to adoptive
families and every shopkeeper wants to talk about your baby.
Some of the shopkeepers remember your name and call to you from
the street. It is fun and relaxed here and easy to spend your
money! At 11:00 our new guide, Judy, took us to the pearl
market. It was like a huge mall with nothing but pearls. A place
like that you would think it would be cheaper! We bought Grace a
strand of pearls for when she gets older for 100 US dollars. It
was a good quality; still I would rather have some Jade. Dave
said Jade was much too expensive there. After the pearl market
we returned to the island and ate lunch at Lucy’s. It serves
Western food and has Western toilets. If you eat there you
receive free admission to the toilets – what a hoot! After
lunch, MORE SHOPPING!! We went to Lucy’s and Jennifer’s and oh,
I don’t remember where. Grace slept in the stroller we borrowed
from one of the shops. We bought a new suitcase, some clothes,
and squeaky shoes for Grace. We had to run to the small grocery
store and pick up some water and some baby food, the run back to
the hotel for the evening cruise on the river. It was beautiful,
the lights reflected off the water and Grace loved the sights.
