TB CHECK AND BAIYUN MOUNTAIN
Can I just have one day with no trauma? Today began with Quinn
rolling over and smashing his head into my face. I am now
sporting a “mini” black eye. I was seeing stars. What a nice way
to wake up!
All the children in our group who are over two years old had to
have a TB test. This ended up being 4 out of 5 children. This
morning we had to go back to the medical facility to have their
TB sites checked. Thank goodness ALL of them are TB free and we
were on our merry way to have some fun.
Our group spent a few hours touring Baiyun Mountain also known
as White Cloud Mountain. We took a golf cart (limo) ride up the
mountain where we had a spectacular city view and attended a
parrot show. The view was nice, but I honestly enjoyed the
parrots more. They were a riot. They were so well trained. They
could play basketball, ride a bike, roller skate, ride a
scooter, talk, bowl, walk on a tightrope and go down a slide.
One bird was trained to fly into the crowd in search of money.
Anyone could wave a paper bill in the air and this bird would
fly in and sit on your hand for a picture – take your money –
and fly away with your money. However, it had to be more than 1
yuan or he would not come to you. Quinn was jumping up and down
with excitement waving a 5 yuan and the bird landed on him.
Quinn just laughed and laughed. He was not afraid at all! After
the show the audience had a chance to hold a very large Macaw.
It was only 5 yuan (less than $1.00) to get a picture with this
large bird. Once again – Quinn jumped for this opportunity. This
bird (with tail feathers) was as tall as him. I got a little
nervous as the bird was soooo close to Quinn’s face. Quinn had
such a BIG smile on his face. What a brave little boy. He had a
wonderful time today at the mountain.
Once we returned from the mountain I decided that Quinn and I
would grab a taxi and head back to Shamian Island to do some
more shopping. I put a good dent in my list of things for Quinn.
I will try to finish up tomorrow. Bargaining seems a little more
difficult this time than it was on my last trip. I think things
are a lot tougher for shop owners right now with the island
being so empty.
I found Quinn a very handsome traditional silk outfit today. I
am not sure where I am going to take his picture as the White
Swan is off limits and there is no red couch to be found. It is
unfortunate that the tradition of the red couch was not brought
here to the Marriott. Quinn will wear “black” in honor of his
Baba. Baba chooses black for everything…..Stay tuned for the
little man in black.
I have been struggling in the food area with Quinn. He is not a
big eater at all. As a matter of fact, I don’t think he eats
enough. His personal food choices are so limited and as I
mentioned before he is not a snack eater. The only thing I can
seem to get him to eat is noodles. He is eating them 2-3 times a
day! Tomorrow night our group is having Papa John’s pizza for
dinner. I just do not see Quinn eating pizza. It will be a Kodak
moment if I can get him to take one bite.
Oh – one funny story before I say good-night. Housekeeping came
to our door. We have door bells here. I answer the door and this
little lady (with broken English) tells me to close my curtains.
Hugh? I was slightly confused why she would be telling me what
to do with “my” curtains. I didn’t call for assistance in
closing them so why is she at my door. So the only words that
came out of my mouth were…..Why – I don’t want them closed? She
just looked at me – smiled and walked away. What is going on
here? I am still confused.
