NINE MONTHS HOME

Gung Hay Fat Choy . . . "Best wishes and congratulations. Have a prosperous and good year!"

Happy “Chinese” New Year! We welcomed in the year of the snake with our local Asian adoption support group. Quinn and Savannah could not wait to dress in their silks! We drove through snowy conditions, but we made it. I was just so grateful that it was not cancelled due to the weather. Their highlights of the day were the dragon performance, the local dancers and all the food! They both LOVED the Chinese noodles.

Quinn celebrated “100” days of school with his class. I am sure he had no idea what it all meant, but he enjoyed wearing the hat he made at school. Quinn is obsessed with counting things so this hat was perfect for him. Quinn continues to love school and progress in all areas.

Quinn learned all about Valentine’s Day this past month. He loves BIG so this holiday was easy for him to understand. He learned that we love with our hearts and he is beginning to let more and more people “in” to love on him.

Although we live in an area that is known for BIG snow we really haven’t had a bad winter. We finally got Quinn out in the snow this month. He loved it. He is not one to be cold so we were not sure how long he would actually stay out in it. Playing out in the snow with your siblings and cousins must be so much fun that you don’t realize you’re FROZEN!

We have reached a turning point. I ventured out on my own with the two little’s. I don’t mean to a store. I took them downtown to our gorgeous performing arts theatre. This was a brave move as outings usually don’t end well. LOL About once a month the theatre offers a free kiddo movie. Kung Fu Panda was playing in February. I am not sure if they were more excited to go to the movies or to go downtown to see all the tall buildings. Everything was going so well. We walked around the theatre, took pictures, stopped at the restroom and then found our seats. We were then only ½ hour into the movie when Quinn had to go back to the potty. So, up we all went. No biggy – right? While Quinn was in the stall Savannah stood by me (or so I thought). I still can’t believe it as I type this…..she took OFF! Not only did she leave the restroom, but she left the 2nd floor! Poor Quinn had no idea what was going on. I wouldn’t even let him wash his hands. We had to go and find Mei-Mei - quick. It happened that fast – split second. The 2nd floor of the theatre was completely empty as everyone was inside the theatre watching the movie. I was yelling for Savannah and there was NO answer. I dragged Quinn down the stairs to the 1st floor where I overheard a maintenance man saying he just found a little girl. I knew it had to be Savannah, but where was she? I ran to him and said she was mine and he asked if she was Asian. I said yes and he tells me he sent her back upstairs! Oh my word – now I am running (dragging poor Quinn) back up the stairs to find Savannah who is still wandering ALONE around a deserted theater. At the top of the stairs I hear “Hi Mom” and when I finally see her she has a huge smile on her face and a pose like….look at me! Are you kidding me? She thought nothing of what just happened. I was scared, mad and so relieved to find her. I knew I had to do something to make her understand that this was not something that she will ever do again. So, we went back into the theatre and got our coats and went home. She cried (screamed) all the way home that she was sorry. Quinn cried (screamed) all the way home that he was a good boy. I listened to the radio. I explained to them how much I loved them and why we were leaving. They didn’t want to hear it at that point and Quinn was just crying because Savannah was and he follows her lead. We were able to have a much better talk at home after everyone calmed down. I am happy to report that I did remain calm through this all and I will venture out again with them. Overall, they were both so good that afternoon and so excited to be out and about doing something new. In April the Smurfs are playing so we may try this again.

With all the snow we also had spring-like weather and the kids have enjoyed being outside. The weather really has been crazy. Quinn loves to be outside and is taking in every site and smell of spring!

We have a lot planned for March -- St. Patrick’s Day, vacation, Hunter’s 11th birthday and Easter!!!

Happy Chinese New Year!
