Well, we are here in Portland and it is WET. When we took off
from Boise yesterday, it was snowing. But, the roads were fine.
Just in a couple of places there was packed snow/ice but with
Brian at the wheel we made it just fine. When Sarah got out of
the car at last she was in the greatest mood. She was giggling
and smiling and playing all night. In fact, she was a bit
reluctant to go to bed last night, she was having so much fun.
This morning was all of Sarah’s pre-operative appointments. She
had woke in the same great mood that she went to bed in. We
thought she was going to have a pre-op echocardiogram and so she
was not allowed to eat this morning. An echo in an adult does
not require the person to be fasting but, in a small child who
doesn’t always remain still, sometimes medicine is given to help
them “relax” so it is best that they don’t have food to eat
beforehand. Anyhow, we got there at 8:30am only to discover that
they had cancelled her echo since she had just had one done in
October. Now, we asked when they scheduled it, why they needed
another one when she had had one so very NOT long ago and we got
the usual…..”need the most up-to-date info….blah, blah, blah”
story so we were fine with it. Well, someone could have told us
that there was no need for her to fast. Poor little girl!! We
certainly weren’t mad, just one of those things that is kind of
aggravating. Anyhow, they determined they needed an EKG along
with an abdominal ultrasound to check the spleen and kidney.
After that was a blood draw to ‘type and cross’ for the blood
she will need tomorrow during surgery. Each time she would
finally relax, it was time for something else. By the time the
blood draw was over (four hours later) she crashed on her
daddy’s shoulder for awhile. She had HAD it!!! We took her to
the cafeteria after a brief nap and a yummy lunch of chicken and
rice followed by some ice cream and she was a brand new girl. We
did have an opportunity to tour the PICU and pre-op and surgery
areas today. They have been absolutely delightful here at
Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Pediatric Cardiology is one of
their primary focuses and Sarah’s surgeon tomorrow is the Chief
of Surgery. We feel so blessed.
While we were touring the PICU and the immediate Waiting Area we
noticed that there were a very large number of people there and
some were very upset and others were crying. Apparently it was
family members of two children who were very seriously injured,
one particularly gravely, during a motor vehicle accident this
morning in the bad weather here in Portland. While we have (and
do continue to have) worries and fears and apprehension about
our angel Sarah and this surgery that is to come tomorrow, we
were very quickly reminded of the suffering of others. Our
aching hearts reach out to those families who are so scared and
sick with worry. We gain so much strength from the love and
prayers of all of you. Your messages and expressions of love and
hope and kindness are so appreciated. We have loved reading them
all…however they arrived :)
We will update tomorrow………….keep praying!!
With love,
Brian and Anna (and grandma)
