While We Waited

We met during law school at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. Many of the buildings at William and Mary were designed by the famous architect, Sir Christopher Wren. That is part of the reason that we have chosen to name one of ours daughters Wren. The name for our other daughter, Robin, was suggested by Dee's maternal grandmother as being a "bird" name similar to Wren and also being similar to Rob's name.

We were married while in law school, almost two years after the day we met. Before we got married, we talked about having children in the future. Even in these early days, Rob spoke of having an adopted child in our family. As the years passed and we did not have a family the "old fashioned" way, we decided to build our family through adoption. After much research and many hours of discussion, we decided that our child waited for us in China.

In August 2005 we applied to an agency and began the Paperchase. We worked diligently on this task and sent our paperwork to China just a few months later, in December 2005. When we began the process, families were waiting 6-8 months for a referral. The wait times grew and grew. We expect to finally wait close to two years!

Our favorite thing to do is travel. Dee has lived in many international locations and Rob has worked extensively in Japan. During this long wait, we have taken many vacations. Since beginning the adoption process, we have traveled together to Amsterdam, Bermuda, the Grand Canyon, an Alaskan cruise, Chicago, New York City, Phoenix, San Francisco, and several other locations.

We also like to hike and be outdoors with our dog, Harper. While we waited, we trained for and completed the Rachel Carson Challenge, a 36 mile, one-day ultra hike. We didn't set any records -- we were happy just to finish.

We have recently added another international aspect to our life. We are in the process of moving to Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Rob has left his very demanding position as a partner at a law firm and is now working in the in-house legal department of a company. He is delighted with his new position and while the timing has been a little crazy, our family and friends have helped us every step of the way! Once we are home with Wren and Robin, we will finalize our move and begin our new life with the girls in Canada.
