Lian Tong Shu was about 18.5 inches and weighed about 6.4
lbs. At 5 months she weighed 12.1 lbs and was 23.6” tall.
As reported in her growth and development record, Lian
Tong Shu “ is a smart and beautiful little girl. Her face
shaped like a melon seed. Her eyes are very alert. She has
quick response. She is an extrovert and loves to smile.
She gets along well with other kids.”
According to the Chinese Zodiac, Lia Shu Grace is a rat.
Rats are considered to be loyal, loving, industrious and
hardworking. They possess lots of energy and great
organizational skills.
Lian Tong Shu has unrepaired bilateral club feet. We have
consulted with a pediatric orthopedic surgeon colleague of
Jeff who says that her condition can be corrected very
well with serial casting of the legs and feet starting
soon after we return from China, or at most minimal
surgery. It is her good fortune to be able to start this
intervention at such an early age before she tries to
stand and walk.
Significance of Names
In China, the surname comes first. The surname Lian comes
from the name of the city where she has lived, Lianyungang.
All of the children who were born in the year 2008 and
came to live at the Lianyungang Social Welfare Institute
were given the surname of Lian.
Tong means “child” and was chosen because she was born
shortly after June 1st, International Children’s Day. Shu
means “comfortable” and “happy.” Her caretakers wish for
her to have a comfortable and happy life.
We have given Lian Tong Shu the name Lia Shu Grace to
honor both her Chinese name and to honor a special family
member who is dear to us. We’re thinking the nickname “Shu
Shu” just might work for her.
