As I type this post is is 8:00pm and Sienna has finally asleep. Most adults we know would have been a sleep two hours ago after the day she had. We learned something about our new daughter today. She is tough as nails! She showed us, and the medical staff her inner strength, character and stubbornness. It is worth telling you about.

Jeff and I both woke up not looking forward to today’s appointment. We prayed that God would protect Sienna at the exam, and that if it was going to be a rough visit that it would not set us back in any way with her. We also prayed that God would erase from her memory anything difficult from this appointment.
There was great comfort in knowing that so many of you were praying for our girl too. Thank you! Well, like Tuesday’s re-visit to the Civil Affairs office, Jeff and I were in awe of how God blessed us.

“Little Miss Stubborn” showed her true colors at the ENT part of her exam. The doctor wanted to check her ears. She had 2 squeaky toys. Well, let’s just say there was no way Sienna was going to take this test. She stared down the doctor. At this point I am convinced she thought she was deaf. She had two other women come in and try to get her to talk, so they could pass her… Nothing! So, I am told to get our guide. Michelle comes, and Sienna gives her nothing but the famous Sienna stare down. So, Jeff comes into the room and she does not see him. He understands what is going on, and says “Tung Tung!” She turns around to see where he is. And, that was the end of that visit. She passed the hearing test! Trust me she can hear, and she can talk a mile a minute. Did I stress stubborn enough yet? :) Good thing she is so darn cute and funny!

Sienna did need vaccinations today. She needed SEVEN. When they told us this news, I lost it. So much that our guide had to gently tell me that if I was going to be emotional it would not be good for me to go with her. Well, obviously I was not going to let my new daughter go through one shot with out me, let alone seven. So, here is how it went down… Michelle, our guide came in the room where two nurses in masks were waiting. Jeff stood to the side, and Sienna sat on my lap. I asked Michelle to ask them to not only be gentle, but to spread out the shots because of her tiny arms and legs… First our stubborn girl was given a little white ball that looked like candy, which was the Polio vaccine. The children are to suck on it. Well, trust me, I have tried to give Sienna meds since we met her. There is no way anything that she does not choose, is going in that mouth. Let’s just say she spit it out. Not once, but several times! They agreed to let us take one with us to dissolve in one of her drinks later. Next came the TB test. She whimpered! Then they started the vaccines with two in the left arm, one in the right arm, three in the right thigh, one in the left thigh. Our girl cried out twice, but for only a second. The whole time, Michelle is praising her in Chinese, and Jeff and I are telling her we love her and how brave she is. That was that. Seven shots, two whimpers, and our girl was done!!!!! She is amazing!!! We are still in awe of how brave she was! Thank you Lord!

Not only were we blessed to be there to hold her hand through this ordeal today. But, it ended up being a huge bonding experience for us. After the shots were over, I carried Sienna all the way to Starbucks (YES – I said Starbucks! I was soooo happy to see it!) Then I carried her all the way back to the White Swan. Up to this point she has not been willing to let Jeff or me hold her. So this was a HUGE deal!

Daddy made some big strides today too, but she is still tough on him. She is going to test him for a while. So prayers to have those walls broken down before we leave GZ would be so appreciated. She was alone with him this afternoon and she did great! They went to the playroom at our hotel and had fun. But, she still continues to love him from a distance!

We are reminded today that adoption is hard. God never promised us when He called us back to China that it would be easy. But, He did promise to go with us. We could not have survived the events of this week so far without our faith and the support of so many wonderful friends, family, and the amazing adoption community. We were blessed to run into three families today that I have met through my Pearl/Ruby Blog. It was so wonderful to meet them with their new children! (Sienna is with Theresa’s new daughter, Gabriella in the lunch photo. Gabriella is darling!!!)

So we had highs and lows today, and we just continue to work on taking this one-day at a time. Sometimes, one hour at a time! We are thankful to be in Guangzhou, and we pray that over the next six days that we will see more of God’s miraculous love and patience revealed through us, for our very special little girl!

Blessings from China,
Diana
