While We Waited

While we waited for you, Jia . . .

We traveled to faraway places like Budapest, Amsterdam, and Hawaii, and closer places like Chicago, Atlanta, Portland, Boston and Washington D.C.

We created a special place in our home
just for you.

We fed rhinos and giraffes and rode trains
and learned sign language and volunteered our time on meaningful projects.

But mostly we waited. We hoped and worried and imagined and tried to send you hugs across the ocean. We wondered who you were and how you were doing.

Jia, on the very same day that we applied to adopt you, a group of people asked me, your mom, to join them in helping other kids in China. I happily agreed. We now work together to raise money to allow kids with sick parents in China to attend school and receive some care. The day we learned who you were was the day of the organization’s annual Peony Festival, a big celebration of Chinese culture and tradition.

The 2006 Peony Festival, the day of your referral!
