Our Family
We
are a family of six. The story of our family began 9 years
ago as we were set up on a blind date. Who would have ever
guessed we would be where we are today. Darrian had a
daughter 3 and I (Sherry) had a son 5. After dating a year
and a half we got married. We had a daughter together and
16 months later had a son. Today Christopher is 14,
Michaela 12, Carly 6 and Jake 5.
Before Carly and Jake were born, we thought about adopting, after meeting
a lady in our neighborhood who was adopting. She was a
nurse and I was a nurse, each at separate pediatric
hospitals. Ever since the day I spoke with her about
adopting I felt in my heart, someday I would adopt. After
many discussions about adopting, Darrian would not agree
to it. He said only if we didn’t have the two little ones.
They were so close in age and we were so busy and the
thought of one more was overwhelming. Years went by and I
still felt it in my heart to adopt. As I packed away
Carly’s little size 2 smocked dresses, I wondered what to
do with them. I packed them away and just could not get
rid of them, knowing I would someday have another little
girl, even though I had a hysterectomy. When Carly was 4
years old she told her daddy that she wanted a little
sister and that is all it took, Darrian looked at me and
said I guess that means we will have to adopt. And that is
how our adoption process began.
I soon started searching to figure out how and what was
the best way to adopt, never looking internationally. We
wanted to go through the foster care system within the
USA, but soon got scared. We knew we wanted a girl, we
thought Guatemala, (short and fast), I was scared to
travel to China (So far away and a 2 week stay). I was
scared to leave my children for 2 weeks and travel half
way around the world. But God has a plan and he led us to
our little girl in China through European Adoption
Consultants. They were so great and I felt after talking
to them, China was where our daughter was.
I now work as a pediatric nurse at Lebonheur Children’s
Medical Center in Memphis, TN. What’s really odd is when I
interviewed for the position at the hospital 1.5 years
ago, I was at the beginning of my adoption process. At the
end of my interview, I figured out that the lady who just
hired me, was the lady I met 5 years earlier and placed it
in my heart to adopt. I work on a surgery floor, where my
daughter will have her corrective surgery soon after we
get her home. And that’s our story!

Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward
from him.
How happy is the man whose quiver is full of them.
