GOTCHA DAY!
Today I left Beijing and flew to Lanzhou. I knew I would meet
Quinn in our hotel, but I had no idea what time he would arrive.
I checked into the hotel at 3:30 and Quinn arrived at 4:30. My
guide, driver and assistant orphanage director brought him to my
room. I was prepared with snacks and toys and so hoped for the
best.
Well, I have been kicked, hit and spit at. I have heard so many
“gotcha days” that have gone like this and this is all part of
Quinn’s grieving process. He is grieving so very hard. It was
obvious that he was not prepared for this day at all. It is
heartbreaking to watch. He is holding on to his photo album and
car that we sent him for dear life. I “think” they gave it to
him today. He will not let go of them.
We were in our hotel room for about ½ hour and then it was off
to have Quinn’s photo taken for his passport and our family
picture taken for our official adoption paperwork that will be
completed tomorrow. During the photo session Quinn had to go
potty and I was told to take him outside on the sidewalk. So to
the sidewalk we went! During his mini photo shoot he was getting
very inpatient because he was very hungry. He was yelling in
Chinese for everyone to hurry up! He was very mad. Back in the
hotel I gave him snacks and he said he wanted real food!
After the photos we stopped at a KFC to get some food for this
starving little guy. It was really crowded and he became very
upset and started screaming. My guide ordered our food to go and
took us back to our hotel. That was probably Quinn’s first
experience out by his reaction. He was terrified.
Once we were back in our room and ready to eat we had another
melt down from Quinn. He was so upset to see nuggets in the bag.
He probably has never seen them before and was looking for
something familiar like noodles or rice. He got himself so
worked up and his cry carried on to a full blown terror. He just
couldn’t calm down and then he began trying to leave. He wanted
to go home. We had to disconnect the phone because he kept
trying to call someone. He even tried to have the guide take him
with her. She left as I needed to be alone with him for him to
begin to understand that I am his Mama.
Quinn screamed so loudly that the staff came to my door to see
what was going on. He was also hitting the door to get out. They
were very nice and understood once I opened the door. There was
me holding Quinn who was holding his photo album – crying!
The evening did get better…..Quinn started to warm up to me and
I was able to get him in the bath. That was a MAJOR
accomplishment as he would NOT take his shoes off. His hair
needed washing soooo bad. I did get him to eat a nugget. His
personality is coming out and he is a clown! He is very busy and
does NOT stop talking. I have no idea what he is saying, but he
is already trying to repeat many English words.
I have learned many things about Quinn today in a few short
hours….
- he is very stubborn
- he is independent
- he likes to brush his teeth
- he is very tiny
- he is smart
- he is observant
- he likes to sing
- he likes to climb
Does he remind anyone of someone we all love and know????
