GUANGZHOU
Here we are actually staying on Shamian Island. This is a
beautiful island where many of the foreign consulates are
located. It is truly a mix of the East and West in architecture
and feel. It’s a lovely place to walk around and explore. I kept
getting flashbacks to my time in Thailand as a Peace Corps
volunteer. Although China and Thailand are different in many
ways, the sights, sounds, and smells felt very familiar and
comfortable to me. Under the expert guidance of Penny, our new
Guangzhou coordinator, our tour today included Six Banyan Tree
Pagoda and a blessing by a monk in the temple. Interesting, the
one word I understood the monk say was “kow tow.” This is a word
that is used in English, Thai and Chinese! When the monk said
this I knew he meant for us to bow down for the blessing. |
