CONSULATE DAY . . . AND OATH
Today was the all important American Consulate day, which
honestly was the easiest part of the entire adoption. We didn't
even have to show up, our guide did all the work for us. She
basically turned in Qwinn's passport in order to receive his
visa. Typically we would go to the consulate to receive the visa
in another 2 days, while at the same time we do an oath-taking
ceremony. But things changed. The consulate asked if we could
come today. It was a group of about 30-40 families all in a room
with their restless children, raising our right hand ( our
little mimicker did too, so cute), and promise to protect, care
for.....and some other stuff we don't remember because we were
distracted my Qwinn. We did something similar for China on our
adoption day. Don't take me wrong, we are very committed to
Qwinn's safety and well being, we feel like we committed a long
time ago!
So tomorrow, we have a full free day. Not sure what we are going
to do, we have some new friends we might do something with
though (a military chaplain and his wife). Basically we had a
free day today too, minus the interruption, but Ben was not
feeling well. But as I type, his fever is gone and doing much
better. We are praying it isn't giardia or anything persistent.
Another eventful thing we did today was the 'infamous' red couch
picture. It is quite the spectacle. It is a tradition for all
the Great Wall children to sit on a red couch and leave them
there for a picture. On a count of 3, the parents place them and
back up for the camera. If one baby starts to cry, the rest of
them instantly start crying. Qwinn was the last one to cry,
simply because he couldn't hear them:). So he had the least
torture (we also practiced a little before hand:).
We decided to put a few bubbles in the bath tonight. He wasn't
quite sure. But when he discovered he could still splash, all
was good!
Qwinn continues to do well. Today was a better day, no need for
tylenol or teething gel. He is getting to be quite the piggy
during mealtime though. We get lots of attention when we got
out. He is quite the ham, and the Chinese think he is very
beautiful. We have heard a couple times now that the beautiful
Chinese come from Jiangsu province. When Nanjing was the capital
city during the Ming Dynasty, the emperor had 3,000 very
beautiful concubine. They all had beautiful babies of course,
and the gene pool continues now. Your history lesson for the
day:).
