We’ve had Jia for two months as of today! She turns 13 months old tomorrow! Time has flown by. Jia continues to amaze us every day.

We celebrated her first birthday on August 11th. She had a grand time being the center of attention and having her first bite of cake!

She is learning to be cuddly and now periodically gives us hugs and slobbery kisses. Also, much to our surprise, she started giving me raspberries on my stomach just like we do on her belly!

She tries so hard to learn other skills too. She loves to comb her own hair. She likes to brush her own teeth (and comb her hair with her toothbrush). She likes to file her nails (and comb her hair with the nail file). She likes to dress herself (and comb her hair with her shirt). You get the idea! She also likes to comb my hair and brush my teeth as well!

Jia really enjoys the zoo. She especially adores, of all animals, the goats. They don’t run away from her – unlike our cats.

She is currently cutting eight new teeth. Eight! Poor drooly kid.

We went up north to a resort for Labor Day weekend. We spent a lot of time swimming in the pool with Jia. She had a blast floating around in her little inflatable boat, and also tried her hand at golf! Mini-golf that is, while she was in the Baby Bjorn. She helped me putt, never once taking her hands off the club, and we actually did quite well!! The best part about the trip was how thrilled Jia was when we returned home. It was heartwarming to see how happy she is here. She was all smiles, even through a diaper change, and beamed when she saw every room again.

In the past month, Jia has learned to crawl well, sit up, pull herself up and stand fairly steadily. She is now obsessed with walking. She’s not quite there yet but really wants to be. When we set her down she immediately goes stiff-legged and tries to motor off somewhere.

She is also “talking” and signing a lot more. She loves dogs and says “arf arf arf” whenever she sees them. She likes to point out airplanes. As we are in a flight path we don’t notice them until we see her gazing upward excitedly. Another thing that Jia has done repeatedly that is so funny is make the “I don’t know?” gesture while she’s eating. She’s very serious and very sincere when she does it and we have no idea what she’s trying to communicate to us.

We have learned that Jia gives herself away when she is about to do something naughty. She shakes her head “no” first and then smiles and does it anyway. So whenever we see her shaking her head “no” it’s a good indicator that we need to rush over and prevent her from an inappropriate activity, which is typically eating paper or dead leaves, her favorite food groups.

Jia makes us laugh every day. We’re so lucky to have her in our lives.

We’ll post an update in another month!
