We’ve had Jia for five months now and she’s 16 months old!

She is finally sleeping through the night most nights. What a difference that makes for everyone! She rises far too early but we’re grateful to get a few solid hours of good sleep each night.

She still loves food, but has become more finicky. For example, she likes peas, but somehow now only eats the inside of the pea. Who knew that peas had a detestable outer shell?

Despite her particular palate, whenever she hears anyone crinkle a wrapper for anything at all, she excitedly yells out: “Bite! Bite!”

Jia continues to be a big fan of her winter outfits, including her new snowsuit. She spends just as much time in her coat, hat and mittens inside as she does outside! She is very into clothing in general, and could spend hours in her closet. She especially loves shoes, or “oooos” as she calls them. She will run into her closet and pull out pair after pair to try on. When I tire of repeatedly changing her shoes she attempts to place them on her feet by herself. She does this with all sorts of shoes that she finds, including our own.

It has been fun to watch Jia grasp the concept of who she is. She has been saying her name while pointing in the mirror, at herself and in photos. She has also discovered her belly button and wants to show it to everyone. She likes to find ours and tickle them as well!

When she thinks she might not like something or is very slightly upset, Jia makes this really funny face like she’s just tasted a sour lemon. Then she’s fine.

Jia thinks it’s her duty to discipline the cats. Whenever she sees Harry jump on the kitchen counter or Winnie on the dining room table she runs over, points her finger and shouts, “No!” She has, however, learned to play with them, too! She loves waving a cat toy or wand in front of them and having them leap for it.

We have found that we kiss Jia all the time. Possibly as a result, Jia kisses everything all the time. She still kisses all her dolls and stuffed animals regularly. She now kisses pictures in her books. She kisses the little characters that are embroidered on her washcloths. She even kisses the baby on baby food jars and says that his name is “Neem.” She attempts to kiss nearly every animal she sees and anyone who is smaller than her. Most of her drooly kisses are welcomed or at least accommodated.

One of our favorite things about Jia is her exuberance when she determines that she likes something. For instance, if we begin to sing a song, or even say the word “song,” or give her something really tasty to eat, she immediately declares, “More! More!” She has a definite sparkle to her and we truly admire it.

We are in the holiday spirit and can’t wait to celebrate our first Christmas as a family.
