Monday, July 3, 2006 Hello from Beijing! We successfully made it here! We are so excited to finally be in China – in the same country as Jia! One small step for Joe and Jane, one giant leap for Joe and Jane’s family! On our drive to our hotel, we saw many outdoor restaurants with red lanterns glowing above the patrons. It was quite beautiful and festive. Because it was dark and smoggy when we arrived, we are lacking in photos. I did capture one of Joe right after we checked into the hotel. He decided to have a celebratory Yan Jing beer and watch some Chinese cartoons in bed. (It appeared to be a Chinese version of South Park with weird magical episodes combined with political satire. Amusing!)

After we arrived, we used a program called Skype (www.skype.com) on our laptop to talk to our family for free over Internet. If you have a computer with a microphone and speaker, it works like a dream. Our Skype profile is rydley5541 if anyone wants to call. We’re 13 hours ahead of Central Standard Time. We’re not guaranteeing that we’ll answer, but you can give it a shot! Tomorrow we enjoy a breakfast buffet and then spend the day touring the Great Wall. We’re really looking forward it. And it’s one day closer to Jia!
