What a day. We are now at the White Swan in Guangzhou, the last leg of our trip. We are so happy to finally be here.

Jia was a complete delight today. She is what is known as a “barnacle baby” because she makes her best efforts to be permanently stuck to Joe. Whenever he tries to even set her down next to him we have to get out the ear plugs. It’s all part of her adjustment. We think she was very attached to a male caregiver because whenever she hears any men speaking Chinese she becomes very attentive.

We made a lot of progress today. We were able to engage her in play and then Joe walked away from her twice, and even went into another room. The first time was when she was enjoying one of her favorite activities this morning - tearing paper. After a little while of sitting surrounded by paper, she became upset and surprised herself by tipping over onto the carpet. It was really hard not to laugh. The other moment was when she was playing with stacking cups this evening. It was after a very long day.

She was such an amazing trooper today. We had three, many hours long, bus rides. She was perfect on every one. We also had our first flight with her. It was supposed to be a two hour flight. We boarded a very small, crowded, hot plane in Wuhan (remember, the furnace city), taxied a bit, and then were informed that there would be a delay. We weren’t too worried until they told us that there was no air conditioning and that they’d be serving dinner BEFORE we took off. Other than trying to grab our food, Jia was an angel. Not a peep. She downed a lot of Cheerios, played with her toys and was truly excellent. She also engaged in one of her other favorite activities - patting my face all over and then grabbing my nose really hard. She thinks it’s so funny! I have a big scratch on my nose now because we’re too wimpy to cut her nails. It’s now on the agenda.

She fell asleep tonight after about 10 seconds of fussing. Pretty wonderful.
