April 2006 Update

April of 2005 was a thrilling month for our family! Rob was about to graduate from St. Louis University with his Ph.D. in philosophy, and he was hired to teach at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, MN. This job offered a salary higher than we expected for his first year out of school. As soon as we realized the numbers, we both decided it was the perfect time to bring another child home from China and complete our family. We always knew we wanted two daughters, but we thought we would have to wait a little longer to begin the process for a second time. To say we were thrilled with how things turned out would be a vast understatement!

In June, I, Susan, drove with my Mom and Zoe up to Marshall. In a whirlwind two days, I looked at every single house in our price range, found the house of our dreams, and made an offer. After some negotiations, the offer was accepted and we were on the road to being homeowners. Too exciting!

In August, we packed everything up and moved. Thanks to Rob’s hard work, we were completely unpacked and moved in within a week. You should have seen the pile of garbage that had to be picked up that first Monday morning (garbage day)!

The neighborhood we live in is wonderful! When the weather is nice, the children gather on one of our neighbor’s driveways and play together for hours! There are many young children up and down the street, and we walk everywhere in town. There are several local parks as well as a number of other adoptive families with whom we have become friends. Small town living is comfortable; although, we do sometimes miss the variety of activities you find in a larger city. The good news is there is a Super Walmart, and Starbucks just came to town. Woohoo!!!

Our paper chase took longer than we originally planned. Because of a few hiccups and a really long wait for one particular document from the government, we were not actually logged into China Center for Adoption Affairs until February 17, 2006. The timeline for a referral is really unpredictable right now. My guess is that we will get a referral and travel some time next winter, but you’ll have to check back to see if that is how things actually pan out. We will post updates on our wait monthly at this website, so please visit again! It should be an exciting ride!
