July 2007 Update

July was a month filled with boxes, trucks, shutting off utilities, saying good-bye to old friends, driving across the country, setting up new utilities, saying hello to new friends, unpacking, hanging pictures, exploring our new town, and beginning a new chapter in our lives as a family of three in western New York. What a whirlwind!!! With two trucks coming at different times from MN and FL, we were completely settled in about 2 weeks.

In addition, Rob and I celebrated our eleventh anniversary on July 20. Wow, how the time flies!

Rob has begun his new job as a researcher in a cutting edge field of Philosophy known as Formal Ontology. He LOVES it and is enjoying the break from teaching (which he has done for the past 11 years, 14 if you include his years teaching high school). He works in a beautiful new building in a medical complex downtown and, lucky for me, he takes the train to work every morning. The train station is a five minute walk from our house and I’ve offered to drive him there on nasty days. But thus far, the weather has been gorgeous!!!

Western NY is awesome in the summer!!! There is low humidity and it stays in the 70’s and 80’s during the day. At night it drops to the 50’s or 60’s so it very comfortable sleeping with the windows open (we don’t have central air). We do have a window unit in our bedroom so on nights when it’s uncomfortably hot in the house, we let Zoe sleep on the floor in our room with the AC on. To date, we’ve had to do this three times.

Rob’s new job has him at the office 9-5 writing and researching, Monday through Friday, so it’s a huge change for all of us. He’s working on several of his own books and papers in this field and in Philosophy of Biology in general. Every morning, Zoe wakes up and asks about her Daddy. We fill our days with playtime, art projects, cooking, swimming in the baby pool in the backyard, riding bikes, etc., and by the time Daddy gets home, she’s beside herself with excitement. Zoe looks forward to seeing her Daddy everyday when he gets home and her favorite time each night is when he comes and snuggles with her after Mommy has put her to bed.

Uncle Wally came to visit us, and he and Zoe picked up where they left off last time. While he was in town we went to see the Canadian side of Niagara Falls … GEORGOUS!!! And we also hit the Zoo one day. Fun!

We joined an adoptive families network here in town and met some wonderful people. We are actually renting our home from one of those families! And we LOVE our house!!!

In terms of our adoption, I have been busy filling out criminal background checks (in NY you have to give them a list of every single address where you have lived since turning 18 … for me, that’s something like 13 places), scheduling doctors appointments, talking with our new Social Worker, and the like. I feel a bit overwhelmed as we need to have everything submitted to the BCIS no later than September 17. But it will all work out and this month is flying by!!! As of July 17 we have been waiting 17 months so we’re one month closer!
